Lucifer’s Complaint

You slipped behind your shadow
Like the stone before the cave
You wear a skin of sweet submission
But you’re the master, I’m the slave
How I’ve felt you in my longing
How I’ve shuddered from this heat
I’ve marvelled at your creation
You’re above and I’m beneath
An adversary, plain and simple
That never wore a thorny crown
That never made a sinner sin
That never let his people drown

But I’m in love with your illusion
How I’d like a little peace
There are demons all within us
Some above and some beneath
