Pax Americana

They could have
sung of love songs
or of a romance
by the sea,
fields flush
with wild horses
or a love not
meant to be

They could have
sung of charity
or compassion
or of glee,
a garden
of temptation
or some erotic

They could have
made the pax
and dreamt
of things to be
All citizens
of paradise,
with no one
on their knees

They could have
fought off hunger,
no more genocide,
no more need
They could have
fought for freedom,
but instead
they fought for thee
