RAINE REFLECTIONS

Rainbow

Reflections glimmer
from the scintillating skin
of a dying trout
flipping helplessly
in the bottom
of a soaked,
canvas satchel
riding a dust-gravel road
in the back
of a red pickup
somewhere,
between the ocean
and the hatchery,
in the dusty summer
of seventy-two
a sobbing
four-year-old boy
watches water drain
from his makeshift aquarium
begging his father to stop
so he can fill
the seeping-bag
with fresh water
as the tiny fish
heaves and gasps
with fatal efforts
before growing ever-still
later, that evening
the rainbow skin
was bitter-crisp,
pan-fried
and delicious,
with just a pinch
of salt
